April 24 marked a momentous day for millions of Noah Kahan fans with the release of Kahan’s highly anticipated fourth studio album, “The Great Divide”. Much like his 2022 breakout album “Stick Season”, Kahan built anticipation for the album to drop with clips and teasers of songs on his TikTok account. Kahan gave fans just one full song- the album’s title track- between the album’s announcement on January 28 and its April release.
In the three months build up, tickets to Kahan’s national tour have been selling out faster than fans can click “confirm purchase”. And in case the album and sold-out tour is not enough, Netflix announced a documentary examining Kahan’s rise to fame. The album and the documentary share a release date and themes about how being in the spotlight impacts mental health, family, relationships and self-image.
Just 24 hours after the 17-track album hit listeners with a lyricized version of Kahan’s ascent to stardom, he bestowed 4 bonus tracks on his fans who he credits with guiding his self-acceptance journey. Two days before the album released, Kahan posted a message of gratitude on his X account: “I’m sitting here now smiling not because my album comes out tomorrow night or because I have ‘succeeded’ in any way since, but because I can live with being exactly who I am and I owe that all to you guys.”
Whether you’re experiencing Kahan’s journey of rural Vermont beginnings to sold out stadium shows by listening to “The Great Divide” at full volume in your car, watching “The Great Divide: Out of Body” on Netflix or seeing him live, you are sure to be immersed in Kahan’s tender storytelling melodies. I, for one, will be belting out the lyrics to all his songs as Chicago’s Wrigley Field in July, across the great divide between row 22 and the stage.
