The calls of balls and strikes in baseball have been under scrutiny lately as umpire’s strike zones have been inconsistent.
As a younger generation of baseball fans see the human element of an umpire not working as well as it could, the need for an electronic strike zone is gaining interest. Baseball purists who honor the game with tradition will soon be pitted against baseball progressives who call for the use of technology to improve the game. With younger and older generations getting introduced to this new technology, the debate for the use of electronic umpires will be going on until actions are made.
Those who believe in technology will understand the reasons why electronic umpires would make more sense. Athletes and fans alike seem to be sick of bad calls being made and jeopardizing the outcome of a game. With the ability to have electronic umpires, the accuracy of pitches will be at 100% and you would still have umpires on the field. The umpire behind home plate would receive a signal if the pitch was a strike or a ball, with that technology the results of the game would hopefully be more accurate.
Baseball purists on the other hand are denying that electronic umpires would make baseball any better. Purists believe that the traditional umpire is the most accurate and only needed source on receiving calls on balls and strikes needed for major-league baseball. With the exception of everyone who makes mistakes, people believe that umpires help make the game more real and make it attached to its traditional roots. Electronic umpires have not been set in major-league baseball yet but over time the conversations of if it will happen will always continue.
Since the beginning, baseball has always been about tradition, but it may be time for a new tradition of baseball to start as times are changing. Baseball needs to adapt the way it plays the game and the way it controls the game. Baseball has always been about a game of inches, but if you bring in the electronic umpire the game will be accurate 100% of the time leaving the big time calls at the end of the game perfect. Conversations go back and forth; statistics can be thrown left and right but until then traditional umpires will have to do. The conversation of the electronic umpire will be up in the air for a while.
