ENMU’s Department of Theater and Digital Filmmaking presents “The Giver” as their fall performance, written by Lois Lowry and adapted for the stage by Eric Coble.
“The Giver” is a story about a supposed utopian society that has stripped life down to its bare bones, taking all choice away from its citizens. Twelve-year-old Jonas is assigned the position of Receiver, a position held by the only person in their society that has memories of generations prior. The Receiver is given these memories by The Giver. As the play progresses, the audience – and Jonas – realizes that the society is actually dystopian and twisted.
The cast, including Cybrus Gomez as Jonas and Nathan Castillo as the Giver, does a phenomenal job of bringing the audience into the story. These students give a great acting performance. The crew does their job just as well, the lighting in particular being very important to the storytelling of the production. The stage design is minimalistic due to the plot demanding so, but all the pieces of the set functioned amazingly. Overall, these students do a wonderful job of adapting this classic novel to the stage.
Don’t miss out on the next performance by the Theater and Digital Filmmaking Department, “This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing”, being shown on November 13th – 16th.
