Here we go – Holiday Season!!
November and December are hyped as being a magical time of year. This is not reality for most and may be a real problem. Mental health is of the utmost importance. Depression has a way of rearing its ugly head during the holiday season. Financial pressure, gift-giving expectations, and family gatherings increase stress and anxiety during this time of year. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization focused on providing information and support for mental health struggles. Some helpful suggestions on the NAMI website are, “Don’t worry about how things should be,” said Ken Duckworth, MD. It is a simple statement, but it hits home. There are no stringent requirements for the holidays. The social demands can be too much. Pick and choose the elements that work for you. It is important to acknowledge your feelings and find ways to deflect the elements weighing on you. Recognize you are not alone and your feelings matter. Enjoy the holidays your way.
