The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club was established in 1887. According to their website (groundhog.org), 1886 was the first time Groundhog Day appeared in the local Punxsutawney newspaper. A German tradition became folklore in the United States. The weather forecasting animal has evolved from a hedgehog to Punxsutawney Phil. Groundhog Day has become an official event where crowds gather at the Punxsutawney Community Center anxiously awaiting the proclamation from the treasured groundhog. The attention from the news media took a simple tradition and created a marketing dream. In 1993, the film Groundhog Day came out, making the day a cultural phenomenon. The news media perpetuated this local event into a national sensation. This annual news story captures men in suits and top hats honoring the weather predicting groundhog in front of a crowd of eager spectators. Everyone awaits the decree on whether winter is over or six more weeks of struggle. Groundhog Day has become a fun ritual to enjoy at the end of cold winters. Social media responded with memes arresting Punxsutawney Phil and threatening to replace him with a squirrel for his unpopular prediction of more cold days.
