Imagine waking up and seeing thick snow on a school day, and immediately you light up – Snow Day!
But now you are realizing you have to go outside to scrape the snow and ice off the windows and windshield of your vehicle so you can see when you drive to work.
The Eastern New Mexico University campus only shuts down when the weather becomes too intense and fails to calm down. However, even on days when the campus is open during snowy conditions, some teachers will tell their students to stay home and view the class lectures online as to not endanger themselves or their students.
While some students may enjoy the snow others find the weather conditions annoying and do not enjoy that it makes the journey to class more difficult. Depending on where students are from, the snow can be normal to them or it can be a completely foreign experience.
For Dalu Okoli, an international student from Nigeria, this light snow was like a blizzard to him.
Riding my bike from west campus to campus is just terrible, my bike stands no chance against this blizzard,” Okoli said.
Anton Quintana Pieniazek said “It’s cold…it’s annoying that you have to slow down because you don’t want to slip and fall obviously.”
Other students weren’t overwhelmed with the powdering
Zane Seidel said, “I come from a place where there’s a lot of snow so I’m pretty comfortable with it…I can’t ride my bike which is annoying, takes longer to get to class.”
It’s safe to assume a lot of students feel annoyed while walking through the slush of melting snow. Even still, there are still some students that like the snow and enjoy getting to play in it like they did when they were younger.
Snow provides students with different driving, walking, or biking terrain which can hinder their everyday routine of getting to and from where they need to go.
Learning how to adapt to snow is a part of life. A good and memorable experience for first-timers is going out to buy that first snow scraper or bucket of ice melting salt.
Snow is peaceful and beautiful to look at, it can cause some dangerous driving and walking conditions for everyone. Remember to bundle up and stay warm during these chilly times of the year!
