My mom and I used to really like horror movies, but now it seems that we’ve both become a bit more cautious when facing the latest horror film. That being said, we braved the new horror movie “Smile” this past weekend, and it confirmed our suspicions. We’re wimps!
Halloween is right around the corner, and so are the most anticipated horror movies of the year! Grab a snack, some warm apple cider and a blanket and get ready for some spooky flicks.
I am starting with movies that are in theaters right now or are already released or were released on streaming services. The first movie is, of course, “Smile” which was released in theaters on Friday, September 30, according to Movie Insider.
I originally watched a video on YouTube that featured the short story that inspired movie. It doesn’t spoil anything and includes characters who aren’t in the movie, but it still features the same concept of what happens to the protagonist in the movie. After watching that video, a couple of weeks ago, I knew I wanted to take my mom to see it because of our seemingly previous enjoyment of scary movies.
Sosie Bacon stars as the protagonist, Rose, in Smile and is a psychiatrist at a hospital, where she falls witness to the traumatic death of one of her patients. Rose begins to see and experience horrific things in the days following the death. I will leave it there because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who wants to see it themselves.
I really enjoyed the use of angles in the movie’s first scene. Everything is centered, which gives it a sort of eerie feeling. I do recommend watching the short story video as well!
And for those of you out there looking to get your horror on with the rest of your 2022, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of releases for you to check out. Recently released on Oct. 7 is Hellraiser, which can only be viewed on Hulu. The highly anticipated Halloween Ends is in theaters as of Oct. 14. And for those of you who haven’t cancelled your Netflix subscriptions, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone was released on Oct. 5. A horror movie that comes out just in time for Halloween is Prey for the Devil, set to be released tomorrow on Oct. 28.
For those who aren’t fans of horror movies during the spooky season, please don’t feel alone because I think I’m on the path in that direction. However, I really enjoyed “Smile”, even though I did jump more than I’d like to admit, and I am also planning on viewing Hellraiser soon. If I get too scared, I’ll turn on Coraline instead!
