How The New Generation Is Coming Into The Healthcare System
By Staff Writer Luis Larios
Being in the healthcare system in today’s day in age can and often is taking a heavy toll on someone’s mental health. However, this is not the case for a 65-year-old radiology technician at a local hospital.
While having some tests to be done, I took the opportunity to talk about a few things to the technician about the job and some others that come to my mind from time to time. Talking to someone who has done the job they do for the past 40 or more years comes with such wisdom from their end that sometimes someone could be afraid to simply have a small talk with them. Talking to her, she stated she loved what she does, “being inside an office in which it is only you and the machine is relaxing, you don’t have to deal with anyone, only the patient… I love it.”
One thing she felt is the hardest thing to overcome with this career path was the politics around the whole healthcare system. This does not mean having to pick and choose the patients the technician desires, but having to deal with the higher-ups, this meaning to sometimes doing a study or test without having a discussion with the technician and often having the patient demanding the study, which can hinder the situation in which the patient is in, of course without having their lives put in any danger.
“Covid really hurt us, it scared a lot of good doctors.” As stated by the technician, Covid not only hurt the hospital industry but everyone in the world, from people losing jobs to losing loved ones. Having doctors and other essential people from the healthcare system has left a big hole in any hospital in the United States, which is why there is a high demand for almost every position in the healthcare system.
With the high demand, the new generation of workers knows they can get away with asking for higher salaries and perks, however, there are times when the applicant can not ask for so much and could get turned down. The interviewed technician stated, “this new generation knows there is high demand for certain jobs, but they do not want to put in the work hours to climb up the ranks.” This new generation has always been given everything as a handout, without having that hunger that drives them to evolve and get the knowledge to do more than one task for a higher salary. In theory, we as students will be the next generation of workers, in which we have the future of the world in our hands to make it as pleasant and resourceful as possible.
