As the weather changes from sunny and warm to gray and cold, many people feel just as dark and dreary as the season. While some are ecstatic with the prospect of peppermint mochas and Christmas presents, others are not as happy to experience the long, cold months ahead. Seasonal depression, especially around the fall and winter seasons, affects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. To survive these long months without becoming hopelessly depressed, one must prepare themselves with these tips and tricks to fight off those winter blues.
First, go outside and try to stand in direct sunlight for at least 10-15 minutes. Exposure to sunlight is the key to better-balanced serotonin production and increased Vitamin D intake, which can have positive effects when treating depression. Even if it is freezing and cloudy, you still absorb sunlight into your skin. It is crucial to remember to go outside and enjoy what little sun there is.
Sunlight can be such an important factor in seasonal depression, and most of the time, we don’t even think about it. Opening your blinds and sitting close to windows when you do class assignments, read, or even scroll through social media on your phone can significantly alleviate the effects of seasonal depression. Staying active while exposed to sunlight is even better, as it kills two birds with one stone. Doing yoga, stretching, pacing in place, or working out on gym equipment are all beneficial.
For a last tip, remember to socialize and not self-isolate during these times. Phone a friend or set up a coffee date to remind yourself that the winter will pass and that you will be okay. Being with friends and family when you are depressed can give you support through your struggle. Caring for yourself can be difficult, so having a support system is crucial.
