If you have ever been interested in creating DIY costumes but you were intimidated by how expensive crafting materials could be then you are in luck because the wondrous invention of paper mache can save your interest and your wallet!
The most cheap and basic paper mache is a mix of PVA (Elmer’s glue) hot water and toilet paper. If you have given yourself a slightly bigger budget, you can make this mixture stronger by swapping out PVA glue for wood glue and using drywall compound to create a more sturdy and easily sculpted mixture. However, make sure that you do not use PVA glue with DAP brand drywall compound as this creates a rubbery mixture that cannot be used as paper mache.
After mixing together your ingredients, you are left with a spreadable clay like compound for your mask. I recommend buying 98 cent clearance Halloween masks for the base of your mask as these cut out the tedious process of measuring and crafting a base for your face. I personally use the Jason Voorhees masks that are always on sale. You start by sanding down the shiny plastic and then use a base of tin foil and foam balls to lay the foundations of your mask.
Then, you can apply about two or three thin layers of paper mache to slowly sculpt a mask. After fully drying, if you want to add more details to your mask you can use air dry or foam clay for more detailed features. It is crucial to remember to let each layer fully dry before adding another. After the mask is dry, then you can paint it and voila! You have a homemade mask that can be used for cheap cosplays, Halloween costumes, and theater plays!
