Standing tall in northwest New Mexico, Mt. Taylor (Tsoodził), offers breathtaking panoramic views. At 11,305 feet, this ancient volcano is the highest peak in the Cibola National Forest and the 12th highest in the state.
Mt. Taylor is a destination for all seasons. In spring and summer, its meadows burst with wildflowers, while fall transforms its forests into a stunning landscape of golden aspens and orange maples. Winter blankets the peak in snow, offering a serene landscape for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
For those aiming to reach the summit, the Gooseberry Trail provides a scenic yet challenging path. This 7-mile round-trip trail begins with a steady climb through beautiful pine forests and transitions into wide open meadows dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer. As the trail gains over 2,000 feet in elevation across 3.5 miles, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the forest below and distant mountain ranges. While stunning, the steep sections make this a challenging hike so make sure to come prepared.
For adventurers seeking even greater challenges, Mt. Taylor hosts an annual winter quadrathlon spanning 44 miles and a 50-kilometer ultramarathon in the fall.
Whether tackling the peak for its natural beauty or its physical demands, Mt. Taylor offers an unforgettable experience in the Land of Enchantment.
