The Portales Public Library has long hosted an adult book club, Shelf Indulgence, which meets one Thursday per month at 5:30 p.m. Now, the library has introduced a second club, offering a daytime option for readers who prefer an earlier meeting time.
The new book club meets once a month on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., with its first meeting held on Feb. 5. The addition allows more community members to participate, catering to those with both daytime and evening availability.
Both book clubs are free and open to the public, even for those without a library card. Meetings typically last between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on discussion length. Tawna Luscombe, the library’s head librarian, arranges seating in a large circle to encourage open conversation. Participants follow discussion sheets provided at each meeting.
The clubs read a variety of genres, including but not limited to historical fiction, fantasy, contemporary romance and thrillers. Library cardholders can check out copies of each month’s book club selection, making it easy to join the discussion.
For book lovers looking to meet fellow readers and explore new stories, the Portales Public Library’s book clubs offer a welcoming space to turn the page together.
