The “Quay County Sun” merged with “The Eastern New Mexico News” in February, expanding coverage while maintaining a focus on local reporting. Despite the change, readership has remained high, showing strong community support.
“The Eastern New Mexico News,” not to be confused with any of Eastern New Mexico University’s affiliated publications, serves Clovis, Portales, Tucumcari and surrounding areas. The merger allows for a more comprehensive print edition, growing from eight pages to 24 to 32 pages each Wednesday. Local journalist Ron Warnick continues to cover Quay County news to ensure dedicated coverage for Tucumcari readers.
Quay County, pronounced “kway,” is located in eastern New Mexico, bordering Texas. As of the 2020 U.S. census, it had a population of 8,746, with Tucumcari as its county seat. It was named after Pennsylvania Sen. Matthew Quay, who supported New Mexico statehood.
While print costs increased from 75 cents to $2 per issue, the publication remains committed to local journalism. “The good news: Our news organization is alive and well and making plans to stay that way,” said David Stevens, editor and publisher. “That means change; some we like, some we don’t. But we believe we’re on the right track to being healthy and keeping our communities informed, helping small businesses reach their customers, and holding public officials accountable to taxpayers.”
