As we wind down into midterms, it is important for students to remember to take time for themselves. A self-care day, an extra run around the block, or even just a nap can make the difference in a letter grade. This is a wonderful time to pick up a new hobby, something to take the mind off stressful tests.
Exercising is a great activity to unwind after a long week. Whether you’re a hard-core runner or playing a lighter game like pickleball, exercise is great for your health. However, it is imperative you know your limits- jumping straight into a rugby league if you have never run before, not a great idea. Use the Greyhound arena to your advantage while you have access to such facilities! Learn a new game or swim some laps while you relax.
Crafting is another option for a new hobby. Knitting, sewing, scrapbooking, anything mindless you can do with your hands is a phenomenal way to de-stress. Crafting has the bonus of having a tangible item when you’re done with your activity. If you enjoy craft hobbies, consider signing up for an art class next semester, something like Jewelry or Sculpture.
Cooking is a popular pick for relaxing after class. We all must eat, so learning to cook better is a valuable skill to pick up, as well to unwind. Following an online cooking class is fun to do with your significant other or roommates, and you get to eat it when you’re done. Maybe leave the dishes for another time!
Studying is important to pass your classes, but there is a significant difference between cramming and learning. Taking time to yourself for your mental health and hobbies is linked to successful literacy. Building the foundational blocks of your degree plan will be essential down the road, so you aren’t relearning topics you crammed instead of learned in the past.
