Rats often get a bad rap. Many people associate them with disease and filth, but in reality, domesticated rats, known as fancy rats, are intelligent, affectionate and surprisingly clean.
Unlike their wild counterparts, pet rats have been selectively bred for centuries. They are highly social and form strong bonds with both their human owners and their fellow cage mates. According to Rachel Toor in her book “Misunderstood: Why the Humble Rat May Be Your Best Pet Ever,” rats “show a preference for their humans over strangers” and even express affection through grooming and playful behavior.
Beyond their friendly nature, rats are problem solvers. Studies have shown they can navigate mazes, learn tricks and even recognize their own names. Toor notes that rats are “often recommended as emotional support animals” due to their intelligence and ability to bond.
Despite their many positive traits, rats remain an underappreciated pet choice. However, as more people discover their charm, the narrative is beginning to change. Perhaps it is time to reconsider what makes a great pet because rats might just surprise you.
