Sept. 13 is a fun-filled day in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The Village put on the 32nd year of Lumberjack Day at Zenith Park. This is a fun day of competition, food, arts, and crafts. The competition consists of participants hurling axes toward the bullseye and wielding chainsaws to cut logs. For more of an old-fashioned competition, contestants cut across the grain of the logs using a buck crosscut saw. The buck crosscut is a long blade with the handles on each end, pushing and pulling through the wood until that cut piece falls to the ground with a satisfying thud. To mix things up, there is also a three-man relay of each contest.
The sights, sounds, and smells of Lumberjack Day guarantee a fun day. The food is tasty, and the drinks are refreshing. Buy some popcorn to snack on and check out the jewelry, woodwork, chocolates, and other wares. Lumberjack Day is an annual event, so be sure to look out for it next year. You will not be disappointed.
