How NIL Opportunities Affect University of New Mexico Athletes

The world of college athletics is rapidly changing and the University of New Mexico is no exception. As of 2021 the NCAA has allowed college athletes to profit off of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Meaning athletes can get paid off of their products, sponsorships, and promotions on social media. It has completely changed the landscape, and athletes at UNM are starting to take advantage of these new opportunities.

At UNM NIL deals often look different than they do at larger Power Five universities. While athletes at major schools may sign deals often worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in rare cases millions, opportunities at UNM are often more localized. Most partnerships involve Albuquerque businesses promoting products or services through student-athletes who already have strong connections within the community.

While these opportunities can provide athletes financial security, money for daily expenses, experience in marketing and building business relationships while they are in school, it also presents new challenges on top of school and sport.

Despite these challenges and opportunities, NIL represents a major shift in the world of college athletics. As it continues to evolve, Lobo athletes look to find new ways to grow their NIL opportunities.
