Eastern New Mexico University’s La Casa Family Health Center will be providing COVID-19 vaccinations for students and employees.
ENMU La Casa Student Health Services assists students in maintaining a positive, healthy lifestyle to achieve academic success. La Casa provides students with services such as acute care (sick visits), preventative care, dental services, and much more.
On May 3, La Casa will be administering Moderna vaccines to students and employees in the Campus Union Building (CUB) Ballroom, starting at 9am. Molly Williamson, the critical coordinator stated that La Casa’s mission statement is to serve the underserved. To do this, they created outreach events to assist the community such as the event on May 3.
“Our goal right now is to just help vaccinate the entire community,” said Williamson. To achieve that goal, La Casa has proactively taken the initiative by means of working towards vaccinating the ENMU campus. La Casa will be administering COVID-19 vaccines every day from 8a.m. to 5p.m., this will be the fourth outreach clinic hosted by La Casa thus far.
Students do need to pre-register, but they are willing to vaccinate people if they go to the event without pre-registering. Once they register and the vaccine is administered, they will have to wait 15 minutes in order to ensure there is no side effects from the vaccine.
The Moderna vaccine is a two-dose vaccine, therefore students will receive a card instructing them to return for their second dose in 28 days. Williamson stated that after students receive the second dose they will be fully vaccinated after two weeks and can proceed to follow imposed guidelines stated by the CDC.
“We decided that we would go with the vaccine we have been providing regularly,” stated Williamson. La Casa considered carefully what vaccine they wanted to offer to ENMU and decided on Moderna because they were already familiar with any known side effects.
Williamson stated that they are ready to serve ENMU and hope to be opened once again on campus in the fall. Anyone that wants to get vaccinated is encouraged to go to La Casa. If an individual does not have insurance, they can still receive the vaccine and will not be billed.
