5 HISTORICAL CITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES

Every city/state has a story, some more than others. According to University of the People, a non-profit American accredited tuition free university, History is important to study because it is essential for all of us in understanding ourselves and the world around us.

History allows us to comprehend change over time, society, and other cultures. In this article I will provide the five historical towns/cities.

Alabama: Mooresville

Mooresville is one of the oldest towns in Alabama, with a population of 53 based on the 2010 Census. Mooresville has the oldest post office in the state that continues to operate today. It was also the primary location for a beloved Disney film called Tom and Huck in 1995.

Arizona: Tombstone

Tombstone was founded in 1877 best known as the site of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The O.K. Corral was a 30 second shootout between lawmen and outlaws. It is considered as the most famous shootout in the history of the American Wild West. Tombstone’s economy revolved from their silver mines. The town has also been used in many other films and television shows to date.

Pennsylvania: Gettysburg

Gettysburg is famous for the Battle of Gettysburg and for becoming the turning point in the civil war. Most of the city’s tours revolve around the civil war. Gettysburg top attractions are the Haunted Civil War Ghost Tour, the National Military Park Museum, and The Devil’s Den.

New Mexico: Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and is considered one of the world’s greatest art cities. The city was originally occupied by Tanoan People that settled along the Rio Grande. Santa Fe has several attractions rich with culture and history. A few of them are the Center for Contemporary Arts, El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, El Rancho de las Golondrinas and many more.

Florida: St. Augustine

St. Augustine is the oldest city in the U.S. known for its Spanish colonial architecture. The Spanish colonial architecture is seen in their attractions such as the Fountain of Youth, a building inspired by Ponce de Leon’s Spring of Eternal Hope. St. Augustine also attractions such as Castillo de San Marcos, Lightner Museum, St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and the Oldest Wooden School House.
