For many stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, Eastern New Mexico can feel like just another stop. The flat landscape and quiet towns might not seem like a hub for creativity, but beneath the surface, artists and writers are making their mark. One of them is GM Katz, a local author whose journey from military life to writing fantasy romance is proof that inspiration can be found anywhere.
During her 20 years in the Air Force, Katz was an avid reader, using books as an escape during deployments. “Books were always a great escape from the harsh realities that surrounded me during those times,” she said. Eventually, her imagination took over. “I’d started getting ideas for stories in my head that just grew and became alive as time passed.” She found herself drawn to the romantasy genre, saying, “It was always my imagination that would run away with me during these times overseas in strange surroundings and stressful situations when I would develop wild imagery of magic and myth existing in our world and extraordinary beings saving us from the hardships we as humans face.”
Her writing journey truly began during the pandemic while stationed in Germany. “It has been an unexpected turn of events as far as the direction of my career goals but I have zero regrets,” Katz said. She decided to self-publish, preferring the control it gave her over her work. “It’s a slow uphill struggle but one I am willing to work hard for and not give up on.” Marketing her books has been one of the biggest challenges. “Aside from the marketing challenge, which is really difficult in the book world, I am happily surprised by the many helping hands and new friends I’ve made.”
Time management has also been an adjustment. “There are times that I find myself writing for hours without realizing it and it’s important to take a break and step away sometimes,” she said. Another challenge is fighting off self-doubt. “Some days I still can’t believe that I am a published author… and I have to pinch myself that it’s real.”
Despite the challenges, the support from her readers keeps her going. “If I sell even one book and connect with one reader, I am happy and feel I’ve succeeded in my goal.” Katz’s books, filled with themes of hope, self-confidence, and perseverance, are available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. She also connects with readers on social media. “I primarily keep active on Facebook and Instagram for my book promotions and giveaways so that would be the best place to follow me.”
For those who see this area as mundane, Katz’s story is a reminder that creativity thrives in unexpected places. “I really don’t think I am any different from other writers. We all share the same struggle to do something we love and share it with the world.” Eastern New Mexico may not seem like a literary hub, but storytellers like Katz prove that talent is everywhere—you just have to look for it.
