Eastern New Mexico University will conduct its second annual Media-Con, an event focused on media-related education, discussion and career opportunities, on Nov. 15.
Media-Con 2022 is an academic and professional conference organized by Dr. Darrell Roe of ENMU’s Communication Department as a means of educating attendees on the functions and inner workings of the media industry, as well as potentially introducing them to contacts and resources before they enter the field. With media being such a broad field of study, there is bound to be something relevant and helpful to one’s career aspirations.
The event will be attended by 27 speakers with experience in media fields including television, graphic design, publishing, music and public relations. Many of these speakers are ENMU alumni who went on to succeed in their own respective media careers. A few of the speakers will participate through Zoom, but most speakers will attend the event in person.
“We’re bringing in professionals of all forms of media,” said Dr. Roe. “We’ve got some of our own faculty, but also people from just everywhere. Newspaper, TV, sports news, hopefully a weatherperson or two.”
Some speakers will conduct their own presentations to explain the scope of their positions and the paths they took to success, and there will also be panels of speakers who will discuss relevant subjects with the audience and with each other.
In addition to ENMU students, members of 15 local schools have been invited to Media-Con, so it will also be a great opportunity to meet friends with similar interests.
Aside from being an academic and professional conference, Media-Con also functions as something of a job fair for anyone who would like to pursue a career in any number of media fields, such as journalism, public relations, art or publishing, among others. Attendees are encouraged to meet with the speakers and faculty, ask questions about the media and career paths and make connections.
Dr. Roe recommends that attendees who are interested in media careers bring copies of their resumés to share with potential employers, both to establish career contacts and to potentially set up internships and other job opportunities.
Coming up with a list of questions to ask the speakers is also recommended, as Media-Con provides an exclusive and valuable opportunity to gain career insight from these experts in the field.
Media-Con 2022 will be conducted this month in ENMU’s own Communication Center. If you have any questions about Media-Con, you can contact the Department of Communication by phone at 575.562.2130, or email Dr. Roe at darrell.roe@enmu.edu
