The Importance of Prioritizing Mental Health During the Semester

While the start of the school semester can be an exciting time with the opportunity for new experiences and challenges, many students feel that it brings pressure and mental strain. It’s easy for students to prioritize grades over their own well-being. The importance of self-care should be touched on at the beginning of every semester, exploring why it matters and how it can make a significant difference in college.

Governors State University reports every year, approximately 24,000 college students attempt suicide with 1,100 completing suicide. The numbers are hard reminders of the emotional toll college can take on a person. This makes it the second leading cause of death among college students behind car accidents.

It’s easy to get lost in the mountain of assignments during the semester, making it even easier to not notice when you’re slipping into a depression. Setting reminders to check in with yourself is vital practice for maintaining and preparing for any issues you may face with your mental health. Taking a moment to reflect on your thoughts and feelings can help you identify any signs of stress, burnout, and anxiety. Regular self-assessment allows you to take necessary steps to adjust priorities or when it’s time to reach out to a professor.

Students can take several steps to prepare for the challenges they may face. A major one is building a network of friends and family members who are ready to help you when the pressure becomes too much. Second, find out what resources are available to you on campus,

such as counselors or even a facility member you trust. Lastly, setting aside time to focus on relaxing habits like exercise, hobbies, and spending time with friends outside of campus. Even something as small as a face mask and talking to a friend on the phone can help you feel refreshed.

By adopting proactive strategies, seeking support when needed, and practicing self-care, students can pave the way for a college experience that is not only successful but emotionally and mentally enriching.
