The last few days have definitely been stressful out at the farm. With the weather warming up and work getting busier everyone is lucky to be home early. A lot of maintenance has been going on lately. Maintaining the farm and vehicles along with cleaning after everyone.
Cleaning up the pins has become a huge factor at the farm. Usually they are cleaned up pretty well, but since work has been busy it has become a little harder to maintain. Pins are full of animals and vehicles are needing maintenance so it’s hard to work around it.
Another thing that has been cleaned up and ready to go for hot weather coming is cleaning the tubs of drinking water. These tubs can easily become dirty and build up a lot of stuff. The easiest way to do this is to let the water get as low as possible unless it needs to be done sooner than later. If so, a bucket is used and we typically just dump the water out onto the grass. After we tip over the tub and wash it out as best as possible and scrub. After it is cleaned it is moved to a different spot in the pin and set down. Since winter and rain came it easily became muddy and thick around the tub.
Cleaning the pins is pretty easy. Usually a skid steer is used and scrapes the excess dirt and manure and we make a huge pile. If my grandpa plants he’ll use the manure. If not, there are other ways to get rid of it.
After everything was finished my brother stayed behind and waited for the water to fill up and let the cattle enjoy freshwater! Usually he’ll find something to do or just hang out and sit outside. This time one of the cows seemed to enjoy him so he started playing with her. It is fun to blow off some steam and play around for a bit after a day of hard work!
